The Advanced Urinary Disease Service at the UCVMC-SD is State-of-the-Art for specialized care in urinary disease. Dr. Larry Cowgill, Director of the UCVMC-SD, is Chairing an Organizing Committee of leading experts working to establish Small Animal Nephrology and Urology (SANU) as the 6th medical specialty under the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). If approved by ACVIM and the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (the committee of the AVMA that oversees all veterinary specialties in the United States), SANU would join Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Small Animal Internal Medicine, and Large Animal Internal Medicine under the ACVIM umbrella. The Organizing Committee for SANU has been preparing for this specialty for nearly 20 years and believes the discipline of urinary disease is now sufficiently robust and scientifically endowed to provide this advanced expertise to the veterinary profession, clients, and our patients. The specialty of SANU would provide specialized diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients, a unique training vision for trainees, and an advanced standard of care for the management of urinary disease.
The Advanced Urinary Disease Service at the UCVMC-SD under the direction of Drs. Sheri Ross, Cedric Dufayet, and Cowgill have been providing this comprehensive level of specialized care for San Diego and surrounding communities since 2002.
